I love shopping along Main Street – love the boutiques, the originality and the one-of-a kind finds. Favourite haunts are Front and Co. (I can always find something to buy there) and the Barefoot Contessa (great dresses)… not just for clothes, but for interesting and affordable jewelery by local or Canadian designers (Simply Sublime and Toodlebunny come to mind). Now I have one more boutique to add to the list – Devil May Wear. Stephanie, the Owner, was in the shop and we chatted a bit about her jewelery pieces – all one-of-a kind, handmade (by her) and affordable. I was immediately drawn to the origami crane on a gold chain and snapped it up immediately. She was folding a stack of really cute frilly panties, which she sews herself, are made from sustainable fabric and spandex free. More about Devil May Wear in this Georgia Straight article and her store can be found on etsy.com. Visit the store on Car Free Day today!

I often wander the city eating, drinking, shopping… but nothing delights me more than sleuthing, as in figuring out who got what from whom and where (and how much cheaper). That’s why I’m starting a ‘Secrets of the City’ category.
What’s today’s secret that I’ve been sitting on for weeks? Muffins. I tend to avoid muffins because they’re usually dry, high in sugar, white flour and all the bad stuff. I stopped by Caffe Artigiano the other morning with a friend for the usual french vanilla steamed milk (the coffee is just WAY too strong for my fragile palate) and picked up a muffin. It looked like a plain blueberry oatmeal muffin but one bite into it it was heavenly – moist yet crumbly, flavourful and savoury with a hint of cinnamon. Side note: delish by itself, maybe even better with a dollop of Devonshire Cream. I finished the whole thing and a second and I resolved to find the source/supplier. Turns out that it’s a little bakery on the Westside near UBC (one thing you must know about me – I LOVE local finds) called Pane e Formaggio. I ventured into this delightfully narrow but immaculately decorated bakery on a cold Tuesday and perused all the artisan breads, cheeses, pastries and of course, muffins. One bite of this gold standard of muffins and you will never look at one from Timmy’s, Costco or Starbucks again.

So I headed down to this event that my Grandma’s ‘school’ was holding – it was a food fair fundraiser. Found every Taiwanese dish from beef noodle soup, to fermented rice to bubble tea… all the food you grew up with. Came across these tiny tapioca balls – I’ve always avoided making the regular tapioca that you find in the tea shops – the larger 1cm diameter ones because it needs to be watched, carefully cooked and is time consuming. Found these tasty small ones about 1/5 the size – cooking time 5 minutes!
Got introed to this Taiwanese warehouse that supplied the tapioca, along with Taiwanese imports such as rock sugar, tea, fruit syrups (for all your bubble tea needs), 8 treasure beans (and all your ice plate needs), grass jelly, egg milk powder etc.
